Recommended VST: Genny (Sega Genesis FM Emulation)

This is actually implemented now, I just need to clean it up and optimize a bit. Example:

This is a pretty great freeware Genesis FM emulation it's still a Beta version but I haven't really ran into any serious bugs with it, besides the Fl Studio version not working.  I'm pretty sure the same guy who created this made the YM2612 vst which was pretty cool as well but this one is more fully featured.  If imported TFI's are a good standard to judge by this synth is very comparable to AlyJamesLab's FMDrive vst, TFI files sounded about identical on each.  

One thing this has over FMDrive & VOPM is a PSG synth feature which allows you to copy an FM envelope to a PSG channel which works really well layered with the original FM sound.  This technique was common for alot of Genesis soundtracks.

It comes with 112 presets and a pretty great built-in preset manager with the already mentioned ability to import TFI, their's also a feature to import drum sounds that I haven't really figured out or messed with much. I'll be posting 4 banks of converted TFI files (478 patches) with general FM Instruments, & another bank of 77 patches from Sonic the Hedgehog 1 in the very near future.

    You forgot to mention that AlyJamesLab have an entire synth dedicated to the PSG called SPSG VST

  2. Yeah I should have mentioned that, but having both synths combined with envelope transferring as Genny does is rather unique and provides advantages over separate emulations where you'd have to manually copy settings.

  3. Forgive my extreme, extreme newbie status to anything midi, I'm just learning the very basics. But how does importing instruments work? Presumably this means being able to use custom sounds from certain Gen games. Hopefully I can do it, I use a basic midi sequencer.

    1. Yeah as long as your sequencer supports loading VST instruments it should work. Importing instruments is pretty simple in Genny you click on the "Import" tab right next to the "Presets" tab in the top right and click on "Import Instrument" and browse to the file you want to import. To get sounds to use download a TFI pack from http://www.alyjameslab.com/wa_files/TFI_20SOUND_20PACK.zip or elsewhere. The tracks from the games are just numbered so you can't tell what instrument it is until you load it.

  4. Unfortunately, I don't know if I can. I can't use DAW like FL Studio, so the only method I found for getting the Gen vst to work with the Sequencer was connecting VSTHost and importing it from there. I don't see a way to access the specific gui, just the preset synths that come with the sequencer I'm using. In fairness I know next to nothing about midi sequencing.

I actually had a bit of trouble when I first tried to use VSTHost since for whatever reason it doesn't open the GUI by default, but to open the GUI you just have to click the Plugin menu then click Window and click Edit or click the gray circle by the i in the little plugin box. Is their a specific reason why you can't use a DAW?

  5. Well, I can't use a DAW because I'm blind. Thanks to FL Studio's graphical interface, it's completely impossible to use. I use QWS aka Quick Windows Sequencer, which is a stripped-down drop-down menu interface.
    Anyway, I have extreme difficulty even getting the vst to play, let alone getting the gui running. Looks to be something else that's out of my reach.

    1. Sorry to hear that but props to you for being able to get around the internet and what not, I imagine that can't be easy. Most DAW's have a dark interface like Fl Studio but their are some like Ableton Live that have a good bit of contrast that may be more user-friendly for the visually impaired. Alternatively you could use a program like Savihost(from the creator of Vsthost) to directly record the output of a VST. The GUI of Genny itself may be an issue as it's kind of dark but their's another VST called VOPM with a lighter GUI that also lets you import sounds from Sega Genesis games.

      The KVR audio forum would be a good place to ask for recommendations as their are members there with eyesight problems that are successfully making music on their computers.

  7. Are you using 64 bit fl studio? if so I believe they discontinued the built in bit bridge, so you'd have to use something like jbridge to use it. Also if I recall correctly the FL version never worked for me I had to use the VST version so make sure you put the VST version with your other vst plugins.

  8. aparently you still exist, so can i ask if the vgm instrument read is incorporated yet and if so how do i use it?
